Witold Lutosławski (1913–1994) was a major 20th-century Polish composer and conductor, celebrated for works like his Concerto for Orchestra and Cello Concerto. Early pieces such as Dance Preludes (1954), which he called a "farewell to folklore", reflect his use of Polish folk elements. Later, he developed a distinctive style using controlled aleatoricism and interval-based harmonies. Despite political pressures, he remained artistically independent and received numerous honors, including the Order of the White Eagle.
