In this song, Alicia Keys shares how the experience of watching her grandmother die after a long illness was instrumental in helping her find a new perspective. She told the Daily Mail December 14, 2007: "Witnessing a loved one dying was very hard. She was one of the most influential women in my life and seeing her in pain wasn't nice - there was nothing I could do. I tried to keep a positive outlook, but what will be will be. The song came from the feeling of knowing that I needed to say all these things to her while she was still there. There's no point bringing flowers to somebody's funeral. It's more important to bring the flowers while your loved ones are still alive."
