Description
Dixie Belles were an American girl group briefly popular in the early 1960s.
Based in Memphis, Tennessee, they had all previously sung backup in various capacities, and had their big break in 1963 when they met producer Bill Justis. Monument Records signed Justis and the Dixie Belles, and released their first single, "(Down At) Papa Joe's". The song hit #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 late in 1963, and the follow-up, "Southtown U.S.A.", hit #15 early in 1964.
A full-length album was released, but a third single failed to chart, and their contract with Monument ended. They never released another single and have not been heard from since.
