In 1808, under the threat of Napoleon’s advancing forces, the Portuguese royal family fled to their colony across the Atlantic. For the first time ever, a European kingdom established its court in a colony, giving rise to an unprecedented transformation. The royal court’s arrival reshaped the colony, laying the foundation for a sovereign nation. Kingdom Beyond the Sea tells the epic story of this journey, from the court’s escape from Lisbon to the flourishing of the new kingdom. The song captures the birth of a nation and the deep connection between the crown and the colony that became a new empire.
