Description
“Sleep Dearie, Sleep” is a traditional Scottish lament. The Gaelic title “Caidil mo Ghaoil” translates as ‘Sleep my love.’ The focus of the song is about the comparison of death and long sleep.
Laid down in 1912 for the use of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the Regiment, the tune is used as a duty-call or signal call, such as “Taps”, to signal lights out. It is also played to end the annual Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle.
The tune was famously played to conclude Queen Elizabeth the Second’s funeral.
