Jethro Tull was rock'n roll band that formed in Blackpool Lancashire in '67.Tull played rock, metal, blues, jazz, fusion and folk rock. The band led by rock wizard vocalist/flautist/guitarist Ian Anderson. The man was immortal and was filled with energy like a rock god on stage.Playing an instrument relatively used for classical or big band orchestra music/scores as a weapon of ROCK!His spontaneous personality and theatrical act on stage, playing, spitting, moaning, and playing into the flute like some sort of bagpiped marching band WARRIOR up the hills of ROCK to the GODS OF ROCK like a composer who went completely MAD.Jethro Tull went through many band changes over the years but was always an astonishing act on stage and the studio by a very successful leader, Mr Ian Anderson that is.Jethro Tull got the band name after the 18th-century agriculturist "Jethro Tull.Jethro Tull was an English agricultural pioneer from Berkshire that helped bring about the British Agricultural Revolution. He was born in 1674 and died on Feb 21, 1741 in Hungerford, Berkshire, England. In the early days of Jethro Tull Ian was the guitar player was dominated by the GUITAR HERO Mick Abrahams.Ian decided to play a different instrument and to be a musician that would stand out.Ian did something or played something, like an instrument that no rock band would even think of playing.Mick would bring his friend Clive Bunker into Tull who was a phenomenal BASHFUL, LOUD, JAZZY, ROCK DRUMMER OF THUNDER AND LIGHTING and was the METRONOME of ship JETHRO TULL(his last album was Aqualung with Tull).Jethro Tull released their 1st album "This Was" on 25 Oct '68(UK)and 3 Feb '69(US)after getting a record deal and playing successful shows at the National Jazz and Blues Festival at Sunbury-on-Thames in Aug '68.Also touring and opening for Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Procol Harum and Vanilla Fudge.Other GUITAR GODS also auditioned for Tull such as Mick Taylor(joined Rolling Stones)and Tony Iommi. But the gigs and vibes did not feel right until after the departure of Mick Abrahams before being replaced by Martin Barre. In addition there is one piece of footage out there that can be seen of Jethro Tull with Tony Iommi playing "A Song For Jeffery" on The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus on 11 Dec '68 before Tony's departure and going back to his old band in Birmingham to rejoin "EARTH"(later named Black Sabbath).Glenn Cornick was a trained musician and a friend of Ian Anderson but would depart from the band shortly after the Isle of Wight festival in Aug '70.But was the original bass player for the bands first 3 1/2 albums(This Was, Stand Up, Benefit, and some work on Aqualung).Glenn was replaced by Jeffery Hammond during the Aqualung sessions.Keyboardist John Evan would be the last member to join during the early Tull days in April '70.John's 1st session album was "Benefit"(JT 3rd LP)but later being credited on Tull's 4th album Aqualung in '71.According to Ian Aqualung was not supposed to be a concept album(an album with a theme about religion, reality and society),but I like to think of it as one.The album cover was an oil painting of a picture taken of a homeless man by Ian's wife Jennie in Thames Embankment London. The original front and back artwork painting were unfortunately stolen from a London hotel or from Chrysalis record office during a robbery.Jennie wrote most of the lyrics on the Aqualung album.Fact was that Led Zeppelin was next store in a different room at Island Studio's recording during the same time as Aqualung."Wind Up" was one of the heavier tracks on the "My God" side 2 of the LP.Another track where Ian sings about religion. Here is an early outtake version with a little more loose feeling, I had fun with this 1 doing my own thing. From the photos/footage I've seen, it looks like from '69(maybe '68)-'71 Clive was using a double bass drum 60's Ludwig kit in either a black or blue oyster pearl wrap.Looks like there were some sort of stainless steel looking wrap on the rack toms at one point(1 point matching oyster wraps on the rack toms too)and a 2nd Ludwig floor tom in a black diamond pearl wrap.3 cymbals, hats, + a cowbell.
