Mario Lanza (1921-1959) was an American tenor, actor, and Hollywood movie star of the late 1940s and the 1950s. Composer Charles Gounod especially designed this melody to be superimposed over Bach's Prelude No. 1 in C major, therefore this work is often labeled Bach/Gounod.
