Description

The Harptones almost always show up on most people’s list of top R n’ B groups from the 50s primarily because of Willie’s fantastic lead and Raoul’s outstanding arrangements. They were formed in New York City in late 1953 and debuted shortly after with one of the greatest ballads of the era, “A Sunday Kind of Love.” After a decade of excellent releases on a variety of labels, the Harptones started to wind down in the early-60s, but continued to record on-and-off until the 80s. They joined the oldies circuit in the 90s, and, judging from the pre-song banter, this may have been one of their very earliest revival performances. It appears that the quartet here may be composed of three original members: Willie Winfield, “William Dempsey” James, and William “Dicey Galloway” along with Marlowe” Lowe” Murray (of the Fi-Tones), but I haven’t been able to confirm all of that. Be prepared to be transported to a heavenly place with this memorable, classic ballad!
