A Handful of Pleasant Delites is a 1977 folk album by British musicians Philip Astle & Paul Williamson.
The disc was recorded inside the church of Whappenham, Northamptonshire, England and the chosen repertoire includes melodies and ballads ranging from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century.
I thought about the release of this album on my channel for several days, and if in the end I decided to share part of this work with you, it is not for the choice of the repertoire, but for its execution.
Astle and Williamson used a formidable instrumentation and the result is very credible from a historical point of view. The selection I made of the songs taken from their album excludes all the repertoire that goes beyond the sixteenth century. What has been included, even if it belongs to the years immediately following the fifteenth century, appears so historically informed and interesting that it would have been a shame to let it be forgotten. Inside the booklet there are even some quite serious errors, probably due to the lack of means and informations available to the two musicians; for example the famous melody of Italian origin "Trotto", contained in the London Manuscript, is described as a "lively English dance of the 14th century" ...
Anyway, the performance is so realistic, essential and convincing that it will be very easy to go beyond these details to enjoy a genuine and credible listening, free from any kind of pompous orchestral arrangement son of nineteenth-century classicism.
I firmly believe that, even if perhaps a little unconsciously, this folk record is truly an excellent jewel of ancient music.
