For over seven centuries, the Bell and Drum towers located in the heart of the city kept the time for the capital of the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Empires. The first towers were built under Kublai Khan in 1272. Although they lost their official function by decree in 1924, the two towers remain prominent Beijing landmarks. The Drum Tower features a fascinating museum of timekeeping in the days of the dynasties.
