While the opening guitar riff of the group’s first top-5 hit may have been inspired by Duane Eddy’s “Moovin’ N’ Groovin’” https://youtu.be/i35JWhvbzCs , the lyrics were sung to the tune of Chuck Berry’s “Sweet Little Sixteen” https://youtu.be/WJ4wlHkOZNc (Berry’s name was added to the label’s composer credit on later issues of “Surfin’ U.S.A.).
