This TVB series "The Foundation" which actually translates into "Decisive Battle of Xuanwu Gates" was made in 1984. The story is a work of fiction and is very loosely based on the rise of Li Shimin (李世民) from being an out of favour prince to becoming Emperor Taizong (唐太宗) of the Tang Dynasty. Thus ushering in a "Golden Age" of prosperity in China's history. But because he killed his brothers to gain the throne, much intrigue surrounds it. Li Shimin Is usually portrayed as the good guy In the stories and his brothers are evil. I often wonder if it was that straight forward.

This series had an all star cast with Michael Miu (苗僑偉) as Li Shimin, Felix Wong (黃日華) as the martial arts expert Kong Fung, Barbara Yung (翁美玲) as innocent girl Chun Sik Sik, Kent Tong (湯鎮業) as the 3rd Prince Li Yuanji , and Austin Wai (惠天賜) as an assassin. Despite the all star cast, the story was just so so in my opinion. The story basically focuses on what the three main characters would do to pursue their dreams only to regret it later. For the throne, Michael Miu's character kills his girlfriend. To be a martial arts expert, Felix Wong's character breaks up with his girlfriend. For his assassination attempt Austin Wai asks his girlfriend to commit suicide. So it was a pretty sad and not a very enjoyable series in that regard. The love triangle between Michael Miu, Felix Wong and Barbara Yung was also too much favoured on Michael Miu.

The sub song which I titled "Can't See My Tears Flow" is sung by Michelle Pau. This is one of the most popular songs from a wuxia series so I hope it does it justice. Also describes the relationship between Felix Wong's character and Barbara Yung's character. One of the few series were the hero does not end up with the girl as much as you hope they would reconcile. It is a pretty sad song when you take in the lyrics.
